What are the schools like in Yelverton, Devon?

For anyone buying or renting in Yelverton, Devon.

The schools are strong, and none of them is in Yelverton. Around eight in ten graded schools across the county come out good or better. The primaries sit in the villages around the edge of the moor, a few minutes apart by car. The nearest secondary is a drive rather than a walk. Good schools, awkwardly arranged.

Ofsted has published an overall grade for 172 settings across Devon, the authority this area sits in, and 138 of them, about eight in ten, are good or better. Three hold Outstanding, 31 require improvement and three are rated inadequate. A further 135 settings carry no published overall grade, which means they have not been graded rather than anything about how they perform. These are county-wide counts covering everything from a moorland primary to a city secondary, so they describe the pool this corner of Devon draws from and not the school your child would actually attend. A county figure is a weather forecast, not a school report.

Proximity is also not entitlement. Admission is decided by the local authority's allocation rules, and living within sight of a school gate buys a position in a queue rather than a place in a classroom. The transport department's modelling, done in 2019, puts the nearest primary at about 8 minutes by car and about 19 minutes on foot. The nearest secondary is about 20 minutes by car, about 50 minutes by public transport and about 110 minutes walking, which is a polite way of saying nobody walks it. Treat the public transport figure with more suspicion than the driving one, since bus routes have had years to change since that modelling was done and roads have not.

The primaries in reach carry the names of the surrounding villages rather than this one. Horrabridge Primary and Nursery School and Meavy Church of England Primary School serve two of the settlements immediately around, Lady Modiford's Church of England Primary School sits in the same cluster, and Princetown Community Primary School is the outlier, up on the moor and serving a village that gets weather the rest of the area only reads about. The Wildings Lovaton and a small number of other settings make up the rest of the local register. Yelverton lends its name to the post town, the roundabout and the shops, and to not one school in the area.

What that means in practice is a school run measured in miles rather than minutes on foot, in a place where the housing was built for people who own two cars anyway. The primary options are close enough to be a routine, and the secondary decision is the one that shapes the morning for seven years.

For a village of this size, schooling is one of the strongest things going for it: a county record where good or better is the clear norm, several primaries within a short drive, and no local school carrying a published inadequate grade. The cost is the geography, and the geography is not negotiable.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
