What are the schools like in Winchmore Hill?

For anyone buying or renting in Winchmore Hill.

The schools in Winchmore Hill are strong, and the hard part is getting into one, not finding a good one. Every graded school on the borough's register is good or better. Primary maths results are solid. The nearest secondary is a short walk for most children. With no bad option to avoid, the worry moves from which school to which street.

The four state primaries in the area average a maths score of about 108 in the national tests at the end of primary school. Eversley Primary, Highfield Primary, Grange Park Primary and St Paul's CofE Primary all fall within reach, and for families living around Grange Park the primary that shares its name is the obvious first look. The Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019 put the nearest primary about a ten-minute walk from the typical home, close enough that the school run here is mostly done on foot.

At secondary level, the two state schools in the area average an Attainment 8 score of about 51 across their pupils. Winchmore School carries the place's name and is the one most local families plan around, and Highlands School is the other option within the area. The same 2019 modelled times put the nearest secondary about fourteen minutes' walk away, a smaller jump from primary than many families get, and one that leaves Year 7 without a bus pass panic.

Ofsted has graded 42 schools and settings across Enfield, the whole borough and not just this corner of it, and all 42 are good or better, two of them outstanding. None is graded as requiring improvement and none as inadequate. Another 37 settings have no published grade yet, which reflects inspection timing more than quality. A clean record across the borough means parents here have nothing at the bottom of the table to steer around, so they find other things to lose sleep over.

Enfield Council gives out places under its published admissions rules, so owning a house near Winchmore School or Eversley Primary does not on its own secure a place at either, and a church primary like St Paul's may weigh things beyond distance. The useful check is the council's record of how far from each school the last child offered a place lived in recent years, for the schools you have in mind, because that distance moves from year to year and decides more offers than the Ofsted grade. Families who buy on the strength of a school's name and skip the allocation history tend to learn about it from the offer letter.

The independent schools nearby include Palmers Green High School, Keble Preparatory School and Grange Park Preparatory School, for families who would rather pay fees than play the admissions game. Alice Hum, who founded Palmers Green High School, is buried in the Quaker burial ground in Winchmore Hill, so even the school's founder never moved far.

Schools are one of Winchmore Hill's real strengths. The quality is there at every level, and the work for a parent is getting a place, not finding a school worth having.
