Is Winchmore Hill a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Winchmore Hill.

Winchmore Hill is a safe place to live, and comfortably so by the standards of its own borough. Crime runs at a little over half the Enfield rate. Violence makes up a smaller share than the national mix. Cars and homes draw more attention than they would elsewhere. For most residents the worst outcome is a broken car window, and the borough's average has very little to do with life here.

The police.uk figures for the year to May 2026 record 2,442 crimes in Winchmore Hill, a published rate of about 64 per 1,000 residents. That rate is roughly 43% below the average for Enfield. Twelve months is long enough that one bad stretch cannot tip the figure into a different story.

Across the London Borough of Enfield as a whole, the published rate for the same year is about 113 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 64 here. Buyers who rule out an Enfield postcode on the borough's reputation are crossing off the wrong part of it.

The neighbourhood producing those numbers is dense by any measure outside London, at about 5,760 people per square kilometre, and the census put unemployment at about 3% and overcrowding at about 6% of households. That is the profile of a suburb where most people have a job, a room each and a front door they lock out of habit more than fear.

The mix is where Winchmore Hill looks most like itself. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury and leads the list almost everywhere, make up about 25% of crimes here against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 20% against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 15% against 5%, and burglary about 8% against 4%. Other theft runs at about 7%, level with the national share, and shoplifting at about 5% against 8%. Driveways are one of the things people pay extra for in N21, and some of the crime goes looking for them, so a buyer comparing houses should check where the car will sleep at night as closely as the number of bedrooms.

Reporting a crime is a separate matter from how often one happens. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, putting it 33rd of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 53% of the force's cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of London and describe what happens after a report, so they say nothing about how often anything happens on a street in Winchmore Hill. For a stolen catalytic converter or a forced back door, the realistic expectation is a crime reference number for the insurer.

Safety is one of Winchmore Hill's real strengths. The crime that does happen is mostly aimed at property, and the rate sits well below what the rest of the borough lives with.
