What are the schools like in Winchcombe?

For anyone buying or renting in Winchcombe.

Winchcombe's schools are good, and the county around them is better than good. Nearly nine in ten graded schools in the area are rated good or outstanding. The town has its own secondary. The primaries are within a short walk of most homes. For a small Cotswold town, families are unusually well served.

Ofsted has graded 156 schools across Gloucestershire, and 136 of them are good or better, a clear majority. Nine are outstanding, 19 require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 95 settings hold no published grade yet, either because they are new or have not yet been inspected, and they are left out of the count. The county-wide figure is the frame. The schools a Winchcombe child attends are a small part of it.

Places go by Gloucestershire County Council's published admissions rules, and a house near a school does not secure a place there, however close the front door is to the gate. In the town itself, the primary choices include Winchcombe Abbey Church of England Primary School and Isbourne Valley School, with Gretton Primary School close by. Winchcombe School is the secondary on the doorstep. The Cotswold Academy is the other name that comes up for families looking further afield. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk away on average and the nearest secondary about 26, or eight minutes by car. Having a secondary within walking distance is rare out here, and Winchcombe families get to skip the school-run convoy that defines life in the surrounding villages. Ring the county admissions team for the last few years' allocation pattern at Winchcombe School, since the same rules decide whether a home in Toddington or Stanway counts as close enough.

Winchcombe's schools are one of its real strengths. Families arrive for the hills and end up with schools that hold their own.
