Is Winchcombe a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Winchcombe.

Winchcombe is a safe place, and the numbers aren't close. Crime runs well below the rest of the borough. Unemployment barely registers. Almost nobody is overcrowded. The one figure worth a second look is burglary, and even that comes from a small pile of reports.

Police.uk recorded 214 crimes in Winchcombe in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, giving a published rate of about 30 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 29% below the average for Tewkesbury borough. In a place with a Neolithic long barrow on the hill above it, the oldest unsolved mystery in town is still who built it.

Across Tewkesbury borough as a whole, the published rate for the same year is about 43 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 30 in Winchcombe. The borough figure is being pushed up somewhere other than the Isbourne valley.

As neighbourhood texture, the area averages about 2,900 people per square kilometre across its built-up streets, unemployment at the 2021 Census was about 2%, and about 1% of households were overcrowded. That is a town with room to spare and most of its adults either working or retired, and none of it says anything about cause.

The mix needs reading with care. Total crime here is low enough that a few incidents move any category's share by several points, so these figures describe one year, not the town's character. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal heading that includes common assault without injury, made up about 31% of recorded crime, a little under the national 35%. Anti-social behaviour was about 22% against 16% nationally. Burglary was the outlier, at about 14% against roughly 4% across England and Wales, though on a total this small that is a few dozen reports at most. Criminal damage and arson (about 8% against 7%), other theft (7% against 7%) and vehicle crime (5% against 5%) all track the national pattern closely. The burglary share is the one worth acting on, and a police.uk map for the specific street over the last year will show whether the reports cluster or are scattered across the town.

What happens after a report is a separate question. Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 39th of 42 forces. About 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole county and they measure the police, not Winchcombe. A town this calm doesn't need a high charge rate, though the 14% of crime that is burglary would benefit from one.

Safety is one of Winchcombe's real strengths, and the borough comparison leaves little room for argument. The burglary share is worth a deadbolt, not a rethink.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
