Who lives in Wincanton?

For anyone buying or renting in Wincanton.

Mostly people who own their homes and have finished moving house. Two in three households are owner-occupiers. The typical resident is in their forties. Nearly a third of households are one person living alone, and one in seven is a pensioner on their own. This is a town people arrive at rather than pass through, and everything underneath the headline says the same thing.

Census 2021, which is the source for every population figure on this page, puts owner-occupation at about 63% of households. Private renting accounts for about 22% and social renting about 14%. That is a town with a rental market rather than a town run by one, and it means a buyer here is competing with other buyers rather than with investors.

The median age is 43. Residents aged 25 to 44 make up about 25% of the population, so the working-age middle is present without running the place. Nobody would call this a young town. Nobody paying attention would call it a retirement town either.

Household income runs at roughly £54,400 gross before tax. That is a modelled figure describing the financial year to March 2023, so it belongs to that year rather than to this one. Gross is also the version that always sounds healthier than the bank statement it turns into.

About 30% of households are a single person living alone, and about 15% are a pensioner living alone, the second group sitting inside the first rather than adding to it. Couples with children account for about 20% of households and lone-parent households for about 9%. Fifty-seven residents live in communal establishments rather than private households, which is far too few to move any of those shares.

On qualifications, about 27% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 17% hold none at all. Full-time students make up about 1%, which is what happens in a town that has no university attached to it and never pretended to want one. The mix is genuinely mixed, and it describes a place organised around work rather than around study.

Health reads reasonably. About 82% of residents describe themselves as being in good or very good health, and about 5% in bad or very bad health. Two broader measures come from the Somerset local authority rather than from the town itself: preventable mortality sits better than the England average, and smoking, at about 11% of adults, sits similar to it. Both are county readings, so treat them as background rather than as a forecast for any particular street.

Nobody moves to Wincanton to join a scene, because there is no scene to join. What there is instead is a settled, middling, largely owner-occupied town whose population holds steady, and whose make-up will not make the decision for you either way.
