The schools in West Wickham are very good, and the primaries are the main reason families pay to live here. Around here, the state primaries post maths results well above the usual mark. Across the wider borough, almost every inspected school is rated good or outstanding. The weak spot is secondary age. When children reach eleven, the commute starts.
There are four mainstream state primaries in the area, and their average key stage two maths score is about 107. The primaries include Wickham Common Primary School, Hawes Down Primary School, Oak Lodge Primary School and the Pickhurst schools, Pickhurst Infant Academy and Pickhurst Academy. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelled journey times put the nearest primary about 12 minutes' walk from the average home. Wickham Common won a hockey gold medal for Bromley at the London Youth Games in 2012. Most primary schools never win anything more dangerous than the egg-and-spoon race.
Ofsted's figures cover the whole of Bromley, not just West Wickham. Bromley has 40 good or better settings out of 41 with a published grade, so all but one pass. Of those, 15 are outstanding, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 48 settings have no published grade yet. That says nothing about how good they are, only that they have not been graded. A borough that clean leaves parents with very little to complain about, and some of them find something anyway.
Living near one of these schools does not get you a place. Bromley council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and how close you live is only part of that. A house on the same road as Wickham Common or Hawes Down can still end up with an offer somewhere else. Check the council's allocation figures from the last few years for the specific school you want. Some of the money spent on a house here is a bet on how those rules will treat you next spring.
Secondary school means leaving West Wickham, because there is no state secondary in the area itself. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 21 minutes away by public transport or about 24 minutes on foot, against roughly 10 minutes by car. Those public transport times come from 2019 and can go out of date as bus routes change. Children who walked to primary in a few minutes reach Year 7 and get a bus timetable and a longer morning.
Outside the state sector, St David's Prep is a private option, and Glebe School is also named among the area's schools. Some families buying a house near Wickham Common will end up paying school fees as well, though nothing in the house price makes them do it.
The schools are one of West Wickham's real strengths. The primaries perform strongly, almost every school across Bromley is rated good or better, and the only real cost is a longer journey once children reach secondary age.
