What are the schools like in West Kensington?

For anyone buying or renting in West Kensington.

The schools in West Kensington are excellent, and the borough around it has no weak link among its graded schools. Every graded school is good or better. Nearly half are outstanding. The primaries post high scores. The one catch is the move to secondary, which happens on a much shorter list.

There are five mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils average about 109 on the key stage 2 maths test, a high mark on a test where the expected standard is met by most pupils and beaten by fewer. Avonmore, Addison and Normand Croft are among the primaries around here, along with St Mary's Catholic Primary. Kensington Primary Academy completes the set, carrying the same borrowed half of the district's name as West Kensington itself.

Secondary is thinner. The area has one mainstream state secondary, and its pupils average about 67 on the Attainment 8 measure taken at 16, a strong result for a single school to carry on its own. One school is not a choice, so for families with older children the real secondary decision tends to involve a bus. Independent options appear nearby too, including St James Preparatory School and St James Senior Girls' School, for families whose budget stretches that far.

Ofsted has graded 28 schools across Hammersmith and Fulham, the authority these counts cover, and all 28 are good or outstanding, with 12 at the top grade and none rated requires improvement or inadequate. A further 24 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, which means they have not been graded, nothing more. In a borough where every graded school clears the bar, parents end up comparing outstandings.

Places are handed out under Hammersmith and Fulham's published admissions rules, so a flat a few doors from Avonmore secures a short walk and nothing else unless the rules say otherwise. Ask the council for last year's allocation distances for the schools you care about, because in a district this dense they can shrink to a few streets. "Walking distance to outstanding schools" in a flat's particulars describes the walk, and the walk is all it describes.

For schools, West Kensington is hard to fault: every graded school in the borough clears the good bar, and the primaries around here back that up with scores to match.
