Is West Kensington a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in West Kensington.

Yes, West Kensington is a fairly safe part of inner London, and safer than the borough around it. Recorded crime runs about a sixth below the local average. The biggest single category is nuisance. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Getting someone charged afterwards is a different and harder question.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 5,428 crimes in West Kensington in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, and the published rate for the area comes to about 122 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 16% below the Hammersmith and Fulham average.

Put the two side by side and the gap is easy to see: about 122 per 1,000 here against about 145 per 1,000 across Hammersmith and Fulham as a whole. Buyers who rule out the borough's name are ruling out one of its calmer stretches.

Those numbers come from a very crowded place. West Kensington packs in about 20,400 people per square kilometre, about 5% of working-age residents are unemployed, and about 9% of households are overcrowded. That is the texture of the neighbourhood, and none of it is offered here as the reason for any crime figure. For somewhere this tightly packed, coming in under the borough rate is a decent way to behave.

Antisocial behaviour is the largest category, at about 27% of recorded crime against about 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury and leads the table almost everywhere, make up about 25% here against about 35% nationally. Other theft accounts for about 9% (7% nationally), vehicle crime about 7% (5%), public order about 6% (7%) and burglary about 5% (4%). Most of those smaller categories run close to the national shares. The clearest difference is that West Kensington reports more nuisance and less violence than the country as a whole. The police's online street-level crime map shows recorded incidents by location, and it is worth checking the specific block of flats against it while the sale is still at the offer stage.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces, and about 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified, all over the year to May 2026. Those are London-wide figures, set across the whole of the Metropolitan Police area, and nothing on West Kensington's own streets moves them.

For a district this packed, West Kensington is one of the safer parts of its borough, and its trouble runs more to noise than to harm.
