What are the schools like in Watlington, Oxfordshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Watlington, Oxfordshire.

Schooling in Watlington is strong, and everything up to sixteen is within walking distance. The town has its own primary. It has its own secondary as well, which plenty of places this size do without. Across the county, nearly nine in ten graded schools are good or better. The only gap is the sixth form, and that gap is real.

Across Oxfordshire, Ofsted has graded 108 of 121 schools good or outstanding, close to nine in every ten. Eleven are outstanding, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 151 settings in the county have no published grade yet, which tells a parent nothing in either direction. These are county-wide counts covering every school Oxfordshire holds, so they describe the system Watlington belongs to and say nothing about any single school in it.

Watlington Primary School opened in 1874 and has been the town's first school ever since. Nearby, Lewknor Church of England Primary School and Aston Rowant Church of England Primary School serve the villages towards the motorway. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 17 minutes' walk from the average home, or 8 minutes by car. Places at all three are allocated under the council's published admissions rules, so living near a school gives no right to a place there, and the parents who read those rules early have an easier spring. Schooling here started in the upper room of the Town Hall in the 1660s, as a grammar school for boys. These days there is a bit more space.

Icknield Community College is the secondary, a mixed comprehensive for pupils up to sixteen from Watlington and the surrounding villages. It opened in 1956. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 24 minutes' walk from the average home, 9 by car and about 16 by public transport, although the bus times are older and less reliable than the walk. A child can get through eleven years of school here without needing a lift.

The trouble starts at sixteen. The college has no sixth form, and instead works with partner schools and colleges in Henley-on-Thames, Thame and Wallingford, while other students go further afield. A buyer with a child in Year 9 should look at the bus or the drive to those three towns as closely as the house itself. The sixth form is the part of school in Watlington that comes with a commute.

From four to sixteen, the schools are one of Watlington's real strengths, with a sound primary, a secondary in the town and a county record that is mostly good. The sixth form is the one stage that has to be found somewhere else.
