Is Watlington, Oxfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Watlington, Oxfordshire.

Watlington is a safe place to live, and quieter than the district around it. Recorded crime is well below the South Oxfordshire average. Unemployment is low. Overcrowding barely exists. Once you remove the outliers, a small town's crime figures are mostly a few bad nights spread across a year.

Thames Valley Police recorded 163 crimes in Watlington in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which gives a published rate of about 42 per 1,000 residents. That puts the town roughly 15% below the average for South Oxfordshire. A full twelve months smooths out the odd bad week, so this is a reasonable picture of a normal year.

Across South Oxfordshire as a whole, the rate is about 49 per 1,000, against about 42 in Watlington. The district is hardly a high-crime area itself, and the town still comes in below it.

The town is fairly compact for somewhere this small, with its neighbourhoods averaging about 2,525 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of that explains the crime figures either way. It describes a place where most people have work and most homes have enough room.

The crime mix is close to the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 42% of recorded crime here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is a broad legal category that includes common assault with no injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 10%, against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson is about 10% against 7%, public order about 9% against 7%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. With only 163 crimes in a year, a handful of incidents can move any of those shares by several points, so a year's mix tells you more about that year than about Watlington. The street-level map on the police.uk website shows the area around any particular house month by month, and it is worth checking.

Catching anyone is a separate question, and it is answered force-wide. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed without a suspect being identified. Those figures cover the whole Thames Valley and say nothing about how safe Watlington is. They are about what happens after a crime is reported, and the force's record there is poorer than the town's.

Watlington is one of the safer places in a safe district, and crime is a minor concern for anyone buying here.
