What are the schools like in St Luke's, London?

For anyone buying or renting in St Luke's, London.

The schools around St Luke's are very good, and the borough's inspection record has almost no gaps in it. Nearly every graded school is good or better. Seven are outstanding. The nearest primary is a few minutes' walk from most front doors. A family that can afford to live here has very little to worry about on schools.

Ofsted has graded 25 schools in Islington, the borough St Luke's belongs to, and 24 of them came out good or better. That is all but one. Seven are outstanding, none requires improvement, and one is inadequate. Another 32 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, and that tells you nothing either way about them. One weak school out of 25 is a record that leaves parents here with very little to complain about at the school gate.

The primary that carries the area's name is St Luke's CofE Primary School. It has outlived the parish church it was named after, which closed in 1959 and now hosts an orchestra, so the school has kept the parish going longer than the parish did. Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre, Moreland Primary School, St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary School and City of London Primary Academy, Islington are all close by too. That is a lot of choice at primary age for a district of flats. Places are given out under the council's published admissions rules, and the church schools set their own faith criteria, so living near a particular gate does not secure a place there. Read each school's admissions policy and last year's allocation outcomes from Islington Council before you settle on a street.

The walk to school is short. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, from 2019, put the nearest primary about four minutes' walk away and the nearest secondary about 11 minutes. Those are distances to the nearest school building and have nothing to do with where your child gets a place. Even so, children in St Luke's spend less time getting to school than most London parents spend arguing about which school to apply for.

Two schools near here have closed, one of them Sol Ecole. You may still see them on older lists and in older searches, but neither takes pupils any more. City University is also on the doorstep, which gives a child about nine minutes' walk of possible ambition between the reception class and a degree.

Schools are where St Luke's makes the strongest case for itself. Families who can pay what a flat costs here get a list of schools that would justify most of the price on its own.
