Is Speldhurst a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Speldhurst.

Yes, and comfortably so. Crime runs at about a third of the borough's level. There is not much of it in raw numbers either. Hardly anyone is out of work and hardly anyone is squeezed into too small a home. The most dangerous thing in Speldhurst is the lane at school-run time, and no police force publishes that figure.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put Speldhurst's crime rate at about 24 per 1,000 people, roughly 65% below the Tunbridge Wells borough average. Across the whole year, 72 crimes were recorded in the area. That is a count, not a breakdown, and it says nothing about what those crimes were, so anyone who claims to know what "most of it" is has made it up. The published rate uses its own population base for the statistical area, so it is best read as it stands rather than worked out again on the back of an envelope.

Set side by side, the gap is plain. Speldhurst sits at about 24 crimes per 1,000 people. The Tunbridge Wells borough as a whole sits at about 70. The borough is not a dangerous place by most people's standards, which makes Speldhurst's number the kind of figure a buyer checks twice because it looks like a typing error.

The neighbourhood texture matches the numbers without explaining them. Averaged across its small statistical areas, Speldhurst holds about 1,360 people per square kilometre. Unemployment was about 3% at the 2021 Census and overcrowding about 1%. These describe a settled, spread-out village of full-sized houses rather than proving anything about why crime is low. Plenty of settled villages still get their sheds opened. The honest reading is that the figures and the place look like each other.

The charge rate answers a different question: what happens after something is reported. Charging decisions are made across the force, not street by street, so this is a Kent Police figure rather than a Speldhurst one. Over the twelve months to May 2026, Kent Police charged a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which placed it sixth of 42 forces. On the other side of the ledger, about 36% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. Kent does better than most forces at catching someone. It still closes about a third of cases without knowing who to look for, which is worth knowing before relying on the police to recover a stolen bike from the garden.

None of that changes how safe the village is. The low crime rate is about what happens here; the charge rate is about what the force manages afterwards, and the two should never be mashed into one number.

Speldhurst is one of the safer places a buyer in this part of Kent can pick, and its crime figures are the least of anyone's worries here. The things buyers lose sleep over in Speldhurst are the asking prices and the admissions letters.
