Is South Tottenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in South Tottenham.

South Tottenham is about as safe as the rest of Haringey, which is to say a bit less safe than many buyers would like. Its crime rate is slightly above the borough's. A large share of it is nuisance behaviour and theft. Violence makes up a smaller share of recorded crime here than it does nationally. This is a busy part of London with plenty of petty trouble, and violence and sexual offences are a smaller part of the picture than its reputation suggests.

In the year from June 2025 to May 2026, police.uk recorded 10,078 crimes in South Tottenham, a published rate of about 142 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 5% above the average for Haringey.

Across Haringey as a whole the published rate over the same twelve months was about 135 per 1,000, so the two rates are close. South Tottenham is a little above the borough average, and nowhere near the top of it.

It helps to know what kind of neighbourhood produces those numbers. About 16,500 people live on each square kilometre, unemployment was around 6% at the 2021 Census, and about 17% of households were overcrowded. It is a crowded district of shared front doors and flats split out of old houses. That describes the setting the crime happens in. None of those figures explains the crime by itself.

The mix is where South Tottenham differs from the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 27% of recorded crime here, against 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences come to about 24%, against 35% nationally. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, and it is the largest one almost everywhere. Vehicle crime is about 8% here against 5% nationally, and theft from the person, which is mostly pickpocketing and phone snatching, is about 6% against 2%. Shoplifting and other theft are close to the national shares. For an area built around a busy interchange at Seven Sisters, more theft from the person than average is what the numbers would lead you to expect. Hold onto your phone near the station. At the gate, before the escalators, is the place it's most likely to go. To get a feel for an address, walk to it from the station after dark, the route you would take home most evenings.

What happens after a report is a separate matter from how much crime there is. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% across forces nationally, which ranks it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are figures for the whole Metropolitan Police force across London, and they say nothing about South Tottenham's streets in particular. A stolen bike reported here is more likely than not to stay stolen.

On safety, South Tottenham comes out middling. There's more anti-social behaviour and theft than the national pattern, less violence, and an overall rate within a few points of the rest of Haringey.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
