Is South Lambeth a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in South Lambeth.

South Lambeth is about as safe as the rest of Lambeth, no safer and no worse. Crime here runs level with the borough. Violence is a smaller share of it than in most of the country. Theft from the person is a much bigger one. For most residents the risk is losing a phone or a wallet, not being hurt.

The police.uk figures put South Lambeth's crime rate at about 153 recorded offences per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, from 9,311 recorded crimes over those twelve months. That rate is a published figure worked out on the police's own population base, and it puts South Lambeth level with the borough. A full year of figures also means one bad month can't make the place look worse than it is.

Lambeth as a whole ran at about 151 per 1,000 over the same year, against South Lambeth's 153. A gap that small means the district is a typical piece of the borough. If the word Lambeth puts you off, South Lambeth gives you no reason to feel differently, in either direction.

This is one of the most crowded corners of London, at around 21,400 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. About 5% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 census, and about 11% of households were overcrowded. These describe the place where the crimes are counted and do not explain them. Put that many people in that little space, mostly in flats, and there are a lot of front doors, stairwells and bus stops for the police to cover.

Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 20% of recorded crime in South Lambeth, against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 20% here and 16% nationally. Theft from the person is the outlier at about 14%, against about 2% nationally. Shoplifting at 9%, other theft at 8% and burglary at 5% are each within a point or two of the national shares. The police.uk street-level map shows what was recorded on the streets around a specific block over recent months, and it is a better guide to one flat than the district average. Here, you are most likely to notice a crime when you reach for your phone at the next bus stop and find it has gone.

The Metropolitan Police, the force that covers all of London, charged a suspect in about 10% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. Those figures describe what happens after a crime is reported anywhere in the capital, so they tell you how likely you are to see a stolen phone again and nothing about how likely it is to be stolen.

South Lambeth's safety is middling. It is a busy inner-London district where theft is the main risk and violence is less common than the national pattern.
