The schools are the strongest thing South Croydon has going for it. More than four in five of the schools Ofsted has graded across the borough are good or better. None has been rated inadequate. The local primaries post solid maths results. Parents here are mostly worrying about which good school, which is a nicer problem than most of London gets.
The ten state primaries in the area average a maths score of 107 in the end-of-primary assessments. Harris Primary Academy Haling Park takes its name from the old Haling estate, and St Peter's Primary School shares its name with the Grade II church nearby, while Purley Oaks Primary School and Selsdon Primary and Nursery School cover the southern and eastern sides. The maths figure is an average across all ten, so a family set on one particular school should look up that school's own results and leave the area figure to the people writing summaries.
There are three mainstream state secondaries in the area, and their pupils average an Attainment 8 score of 46, the measure built from a pupil's best eight GCSE results. Coombe Wood School and Harris Academy Purley are the names most families will meet, with The Quest Academy as the third. Whitgift School, founded in 1596 and at Haling Park since 1931, takes up a large part of the local map and an even larger part of local conversation, though it sits outside that state-school average.
Across the Croydon borough as a whole, Ofsted rates 47 of the 56 schools it has graded as good or better, which is more than four in five. Ten of those are outstanding, nine require improvement, and none is inadequate. That is a borough-wide count, covering everywhere from the town centre to the downland edge, so it describes the authority South Croydon belongs to more than the streets around Croham Hurst.
Croydon Council allocates places through its published admissions rules, so living near a school helps only as far as those rules say it does, and a house a few streets from the gate can still miss out in a busy year. Ask the council for the last offer distances for the schools you want, then compare them with the house you are looking at on a map. Those distances shift from year to year with demand and owe nothing to whatever the house cost.
South Croydon's schools are one of its real strengths. Good-or-better is normal here, and the main risk to a family is the admissions arithmetic.
