Who lives in Shepperton Green?

For anyone buying or renting in Shepperton Green.

Mostly homeowners in the middle of their lives. Three in four households own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Families with children make up a fair share, and students barely register. People tend to arrive here with a pushchair and leave with a bus pass.

Shepperton Green's 4,358 residents live in 1,782 households. At the 2021 census, about 75% of those households owned their home, 16% rented from a social landlord and only 8% rented privately. Every population figure on this page comes from that census. With so little private renting, homes to let come up rarely.

The median age is 44. People aged 25 to 44 make up about 24% of residents, so the young-professional years are a minority. Most people here are in or past the years of raising children.

The Office for National Statistics models household income in Shepperton Green at about £69,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. It is an estimate for the area, three years old and gross, so it shows comfort without telling you anything about any one household's budget. Tax and a Surrey mortgage come out of that figure before anything else does.

Families make up a good part of it. About 24% of households are couples with dependent children and another 10% are lone parents, so roughly a third of homes have children in them at any one time. Those children are why the primaries and the park are busy at the start and end of the school day.

Then there are the people living alone. About 26% of households are one person, and that includes the 14% who are pensioners living alone. Some of the three-bedroom semis here have one person living in them, with the other two rooms kept for visits. The suburb is ageing in place, and it shows on the doorbells.

Education is mixed. About 30% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree, 17% have no formal qualifications, and only 2% are full-time students. Most people here finished their education some time ago.

Shepperton Green is a middling, settled mid-life suburb. It is comfortable and mostly owner-occupied, with no particular wealth and no particular hardship.
