Is Royal Tunbridge Wells a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Mostly, and a lot of the trouble keeps shop hours. There's a bit more recorded crime here than across the rest of the borough. Shoplifting and nuisance run above the national norm. Violence runs at about the national share. This is a shopping town doing what shopping towns do, not a dangerous one.

Kent Police recorded 4,726 crimes in the area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 78 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 12% above the average for the Tunbridge Wells borough as a whole. It's a real gap, but a modest one.

The borough rate itself is about 70 per 1,000. So the comparison is 78 against 70, which is the town against the villages and farmland that make up the rest of the borough, where there's less to steal and fewer people doing the stealing.

The town is dense by Kent standards, averaging about 6,300 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment sits at about 3%, and about 4% of households are overcrowded. That's a comfortable, busy town with a lot of people and a lot of shopfronts in a small space, not a stressed one, and density alone pushes up a count of recorded incidents.

The mix is where the town's character shows. Violence and sexual offences make up about 34% of recorded crime, against 35% nationally. It's the biggest category almost everywhere and takes in everything down to common assault without injury, so here it runs at about the national share. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 20% against 16% nationally, and shoplifting about 12% against 8%. Criminal damage and arson come in at about 9% against 7%, other theft at about 7%, level with the national share, and public order at about 5% against 7%. Tunbridge Wells is one of the main shopping centres between London and Hastings, and the people who treat the shops as self-service have noticed.

Once something's reported, Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it sixth of 42 forces in England and Wales. That's a force-wide figure, not one for this town. Across the same year, about 36% of the force's cases were closed with no suspect identified. None of this measures how safe the streets are. It measures what happens after something goes wrong, and on that the county does better than most.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is middling on safety, not bad: a little above the borough, driven by the shopping streets rather than the residential ones. Buy near the high street and you get the shoplifters as neighbours. Buy a few roads back and you mostly just get the complaints about them.
