What are the schools like in Potton?

For anyone buying or renting in Potton.

Potton's schools are good, and the step up to secondary is the part that takes planning. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the council area are good or better. The primary is a short walk for most families. The secondary is a drive away in the next town. Potton parents get an easy primary run and then a longer one from Year 7.

Ofsted has graded 59 schools across Central Bedfordshire, and 52 of them are good or better, close to nine in ten. One holds an outstanding grade, five require improvement and two are rated inadequate. Another 43 settings in the authority have no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about them. The spread runs across the whole of Central Bedfordshire, so a parent comparing Potton with Leighton Buzzard is reading the same council table.

Potton Primary School is the one carrying the town's name and the one most families here will look at first. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk from the average Potton home, or about 8 minutes by car. Central Bedfordshire Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and living close to Potton Primary does not secure a place there, though for most families in the town the walk and the allocation point at the same building. Around the edges there are other options: Everton Heath Primary School to the west, Sutton CofE VA Primary School to the south and Wrestlingworth CofE Infant School for the youngest children in the villages to the east. A family in Wrestlingworth or Cockayne Hatley has more choice of primary than one in the middle of Potton, if they are willing to drive.

Secondary school is a different trip. Sandy Secondary School is the nearby secondary, and the same Department for Transport modelling put the nearest secondary about 17 minutes from Potton by car, about 45 minutes by public transport and 87 minutes on foot. Nobody is walking that, so the morning plan comes down to a bus, a lift or a bike. The bus figure dates from 2019, and services in this corner of Bedfordshire have not grown since. Ask Central Bedfordshire Council how its home-to-school transport rules treat your address, because the answer decides whether the secondary run is a free bus or a parent's daily drive.

That distance is the one awkward fact in an otherwise easy picture. Parents who chose Potton for the walk to the primary gate tend to discover the car's real job around the start of Year 7.

Potton's schools are one of its clear strengths: a well-graded authority, a primary within walking distance and a secondary that is good to have, provided someone has worked out how the children get there.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
