Is Potton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Potton.

Potton is a safe place to live, and its crime rate runs comfortably below the rest of its council area. Recorded crime is about a fifth lower than the district's. Unemployment is close to nil. Overcrowding barely registers. The only category that stands out is the noisy, low-level kind, and the numbers behind it are small.

Bedfordshire Police recorded 371 crimes in Potton in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 53 per 1,000 residents. That puts the town roughly 18% below the Central Bedfordshire average. The rate is calculated on a statistical population base of its own, so it is the figure to quote and the raw count is there for scale.

Across Central Bedfordshire as a whole, the published rate over the same year was about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Potton's 53. Central Bedfordshire is mostly market towns and villages, so the comparison is with similar places and Potton still comes out ahead.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is a compact town of houses. Population density averages about 2,780 people per square kilometre across Potton's small areas, unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 Census and about 2% of households were overcrowded. None of those explains a crime rate on its own. They describe a settled place of working households with enough room at home.

The mix needs reading carefully, because 371 crimes is a small enough total that a few incidents shift any share by several points. Violence and sexual offences made up about 36% of Potton's recorded crime in the year to May 2026, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from serious assault to common assault without injury, and it is the largest one almost everywhere, so Potton is simply typical on it. Anti-social behaviour is the clearer difference, at about 25% locally against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson ran at about 9% against 7%, drugs at about 7% against 4%, public order at about 7% against 7% and vehicle crime at about 5% against 5%. Read together, the shares point to nuisance more than danger, and a town with this little crime can see its anti-social behaviour share jump on the strength of a handful of complaints. Look up the streets around the house you are considering on the police.uk crime map, because a cluster of complaints on one corner shows up there as dots and on this page only as a percentage.

Once a crime is reported, the figure that matters belongs to Bedfordshire Police, not to Potton. Over the year to May 2026 the force charged a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which placed it 36th of 42 forces. About 38% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole county, and they measure what happens after a report. How safe Potton is to live in is a separate question, answered by the crime rate above.

Potton is a properly safe town: below its district's crime rate on every count that matters, with a local share of anti-social behaviour that is noticeable for a town this size and comes nowhere near a reason to stay away.
