Pewsey is mostly settled homeowners in middle age. Two in three households own their home. Only about one resident in five is aged twenty-five to forty-four. There are hardly any students. People tend to end up in Pewsey rather than start out there.
At the 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure here, about 64% of Pewsey's 1,796 households owned their home. About 15% rented privately and about 21% rented from a social landlord. So the private rental market is small, and social housing plays a bigger part than the village's image might suggest.
The median resident is 52. People aged 25 to 44 make up about 19% of the population, so the age group that usually drives nurseries and the Saturday football leagues is a minority here. Full-time students are about 1% of residents, so a student house would stand out in Pewsey.
Median gross household income, before tax, was about £54,000 in the financial year to March 2023. It's a modelled figure from the Office for National Statistics for the wider area, and it describes that year, not today. It points to a village of ordinary earners and pensions rather than hedge-fund commuters.
Households split several ways. About 36% are one person living alone, and within that group about 19% of all households are a pensioner living alone. Couples with dependent children make up about 14% of households, and lone parents about 9%. Families with children are a smaller share of households here than single residents.
Around a third of residents, about 34%, hold a degree-level qualification, and about 15% have no formal qualifications. That's a spread of education levels rather than a single type, as you would expect from a village that combines a commuter station with long-standing local families.
About 82% of residents described their health as good or very good at the census, and about 5% as bad or very bad. At the Wiltshire council level, the preventable death rate is better than the England benchmark, and smoking, at about 8% of adults, is similar to it. Those are county-wide figures compared with England, not a measure of Pewsey itself.
Only 44 residents live in communal settings such as care homes rather than private households, too few to change how any of the shares above should be read.
On the numbers, Pewsey's population is middling. It's settled, varied in education and neither particularly well off nor particularly deprived, and anyone looking for a young, fast-changing crowd will find the village has already made up its mind.
