Peasedown St John

The coal ran out, the commuters didn't·Somerset·South West England

Peasedown St John spent a century digging coal out of a hilltop and then spent the next fifty years apologising for it by building semis. What's left is a village the size of a small town, five miles from Bath and priced like it knows exactly how far five miles is. The bypass took the traffic away in the nineties and took a bit of the point with it, so now the through-road is somewhere people live rather than somewhere people pass, which most residents will tell you is an upgrade and a few will tell you was the day it got quiet. Bath gets the tourists, the Georgian crescents and the coach parties; Peasedown gets the people who work there.
