Paulton

It fuelled Bath, then bought a Wickes·Somerset·South West England

Paulton dug the coal that built Georgian Bath, and its reward was a Wickes on the old colliery baths and a Tesco that technically belongs to Midsomer Norton. It powered a World Heritage city and now mostly powers its own school run, two cars deep on every drive. Frome got the artisan bakeries and the beard oil; Paulton got the parking and never lost a minute of sleep over it. The old spoil tip is still called the Batch, which tells you everything about a village that never saw the point in dressing things up.
