Schooling is the strongest card Old Sarum holds. The estate has a primary carrying its own name, and the walk is short enough that nobody needs a lift. Maths at the end of primary lands on the right side of average. The county's inspection record is good, with very little wreckage in it. Secondary is where the convenience runs out and the driving begins.
Four mainstream state primaries serve the area, and their average scaled score in maths at the end of primary is 103. Old Sarum Primary School is the one that shares the name. Department for Transport modelling puts a primary roughly 16 minutes away on foot, 8 minutes by car and 10 by public transport, which is the unusual case of the bus finishing within sight of the car rather than a postcode behind it.
Ofsted has published grades for 128 settings across Wiltshire, and 106 of them are good or better, which is more than four in five. Six hold outstanding, 20 require improvement and 2 are inadequate. Another 73 settings carry no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than quietly bad. All of those counts describe the whole county, not the specific set of schools within pram-pushing distance of the estate, and anyone reading them as a guarantee about their own street is doing the thing estate agents rely on.
Naming a school is not the same as getting a place at one. Admissions run on Wiltshire Council's criteria and on how oversubscribed a school is in a given year, not on which building looks nearest when you zoom in on a map, and the answer arrives by letter long after the offer on the house has been accepted. Secondary schools in the surrounding area include Avon Valley Academy and The Stonehenge School, with modelled journey times of 16 minutes by car, 31 by public transport and 79 on foot for anyone with a point to prove. Avondale Preparatory School sits there as well, for families who would rather pay their way around the entire question. The rest of the local provision is a spread of village and church primaries that do the job without generating headlines in either direction.
For a modern estate on the edge of a cathedral city, this is a genuinely good hand, and schooling is the single thing most likely to hold families here after the kitchens stop looking new.
