Newport

Newport is what happens when an island needs somewhere to do its paperwork. Cowes gets the regatta, Ventnor gets the artists, Sandown gets the donkey rides, and Newport gets the bus station, the council offices, and the hospital car park that nobody can find a space in. The river runs through it, a quay sits at one end, and the whole place quietly accepts that being useful is not the same as being loved.
