Is Moreton-in-Marsh a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Moreton-in-Marsh.

Moreton-in-Marsh is about as safe as the rest of the Cotswold district, no safer and no worse. Its crime rate matches the district almost exactly. Unemployment is low. Hardly anyone lives in an overcrowded home. On crime this is an ordinary market town, and most people choosing it will be looking at other things.

Gloucestershire Constabulary's figures on police.uk record 202 crimes in Moreton-in-Marsh in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 40 per 1,000 residents. Moreton built a Curfew Tower some centuries ago, and nobody has found much reason to ring it since.

The Cotswold district as a whole recorded about 40 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. The two figures are level to within a decimal point, so being in Moreton makes almost no difference to your chances compared with anywhere else in the district. The same police.uk map shows crimes at street level, and the roads either side of the house you are viewing are worth checking there, since a district average can't tell you about them.

Moreton's neighbourhoods average about 2,750 people per square kilometre. Unemployment stands at about 2% and about 1% of households are overcrowded. This is a compact town with busy main roads and very little hardship, and the crime figures look like that too.

The mix comes with a warning. Two hundred crimes is a small enough total that a few incidents move any category by several points, so these shares could look quite different next year. Violence and sexual offences made up about 46% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault where nobody was injured. Anti-social behaviour was about 18% against 16% nationally, public order about 8% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson about 7%, the same as nationally. Other theft was about 6% against 7%. Shoplifting was about 5% against 8% nationally, low for a town whose High Street is mostly shops, inns and tearooms.

Once a crime is reported, Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 39th of 42 forces. About 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole county and measure what the police do after a crime, which is a separate question from how much crime Moreton has. If you are hoping someone gets caught after the shed is broken into, the figures say not to count on it.

Moreton-in-Marsh is a town of average safety. Its crime rate is in line with the rest of the district, and neither the figures nor the streets give anyone a reason to panic or to celebrate.
