Margate

Reinvented from the seafront back, just not very far back·Kent·South East England

Margate spent two hundred years as the place Londoners came to get sunburnt, and it is now the place they come to buy the flat they got sunburnt outside. Someone built a contemporary art gallery on the harbour specifically to rescue the town, which is a lot to ask of a building, and the seafront duly took the hint while the back streets are still waiting for someone to pass the message on. It has a listed rollercoaster and a naval battle named after it that was fought off the coast of the Netherlands. That is Margate in miniature: very good at having its name on things, less fussy about where the action actually happens.
