Herne, Kent
Herne is Herne Bay with the bay taken off and the Thanet Way put in its place, a main road doing the job a moat used to. The resort got the sea and the name everyone recognises. The village kept the medieval church, the windmill on the hill and a quiet, bungalow-shaped life that people drive past the beach specifically to buy. Nicholas Ridley was vicar here in the 1530s and spent his spare time helping Cranmer write the Church of England's rules, which is still the most excitable thing anyone has done in Herne, and the people who bought here would like it kept that way.
