Sturry

Canterbury's spare bedroom, with a Roman road through it·Kent·South East England

Sturry is the village Canterbury goes home to sleep in, and the newer estates sit where the woods used to be. Its parish boundary hasn't moved since the Domesday Book, and in all that time nobody has got round to calling it a town, a title Fordwich next door took while being smaller. The Elizabethan manor and the tithe barn now belong to a private school, and the cricket club had to go to Fordwich to find a pitch. What Sturry kept for itself is the Roman road to Thanet, and the job of being the place Canterbury drives through on its way to the sea.
