What are the schools like in Little Dunmow?

For anyone buying or renting in Little Dunmow.

The schools around Little Dunmow are good, and for most families the primary years are the easy part. Maths results at the end of primary school are solid. Nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The village school is part of the estate. The decision that takes real thought is the secondary.

There are three state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged about 104 in the maths tests at the end of primary school. The Flitch Green Academy is the one built into the village. Stebbing Primary School and Felsted Primary School serve the older villages nearby, and Dunmow St Mary's Primary School and Great Dunmow Primary School are in the market town up the valley. A family on a young estate full of four-bedroom houses is never short of classmates, and the morning conversation at the gate is mostly about extensions.

Ofsted has graded 246 schools and settings across Essex, and 218 of them are good or better, about nine in ten. Of those, 22 are outstanding. Another 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. All of that covers the whole county, from the Thames estuary up to the Suffolk border, and only a small corner of it is within reach of the school run here. Parents who quote the county's nine in ten over dinner are describing Essex, and their children will only go to a handful of its schools.

Helena Romanes School is the nearest secondary, and that one school does most of the work for families here. Places at it, and at every primary named above, are allocated by Essex County Council under its published admissions rules, so buying near a school gives a child a stronger application and no promise of a seat. The council publishes how the most recent year's places were actually allocated, and it's worth reading for Helena Romanes in particular, because a house bought for a seven-year-old is a bet on where that child goes at eleven. Felsted School is also nearby, a long-established name in the district and a separate decision with a separate set of sums. Few families buy a four-bed in Little Dunmow without having worked out where the eldest is going at eleven.

Schools are one of the village's real strengths: strong primaries close by and a county where most graded schools are good. The one thing to get right is the move to secondary, and that is mostly a matter of reading the admissions rules.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
