How well connected is Liss, Hampshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Liss, Hampshire.

Well enough by car, and badly by anything else. The village has its own railway station, and almost nobody takes it to work. Half of households run two cars or more. More people commute to the spare room than to any train or bus. Liss is connected the way most villages are, through the driveway.

Liss Rail Station is on the Portsmouth Direct line, and Petersfield Rail Station is the next stop along for anyone after more services. At the 2021 Census, about 2% of working residents took the train to work. The village has 17 bus stops, and fewer than 1% of workers used a bus to get to work, which on these numbers amounts to hardly anyone. A station that the Victorians built the village round now handles mainly day trips and the occasional meeting in town.

The real commute mix at the 2021 Census was two things. About 49% of workers drove and about 38% worked from home. Walking accounted for about 5% and cycling about 1%. Only about 9% of households have no car, while about 52% run two or more. In Liss, "public transport" mostly means reversing out of your own drive.

The Department for Transport's modelled journey times put the nearest town centre about 15 minutes away by car and about 26 minutes by public transport. That's roughly ten minutes' difference each way, which is exactly why the second car gets bought.

Broadband is the one connection that holds up. Superfast broadband reaches about 99% of premises, gigabit about 65%, and no postcode falls below the legal minimum service. Anyone who works from home can do so without spending the day watching a buffering wheel.

Mobile is fine as well: at least one operator covers about 100% of the area with 4G or 5G, and all operators cover about 99%. Whichever network you're on, a call won't cut out halfway through a sentence.

For a typical commute, that means the car or the laptop. The train works for occasional trips, and the bus works if you plan your day around it.

All these journey times are modelled figures for the area as a whole, not a route from any particular front door. Beyond the car and public-transport times above, the town centre is about 31 minutes by bike and about 83 minutes on foot. Nobody walks to town from Liss unless they've set aside an afternoon for it.

Everyday destinations are closer. On the Department for Transport's statistics, a GP is about 7 minutes by car, 13 minutes on foot and 11 minutes by public transport. A food store is about 12 minutes' walk or 7 minutes' drive. The nearest hospital is about 31 minutes by car and about 69 minutes by public transport. Employment centres are about 21 minutes by car and 28 by public transport. The public-transport figures date from 2019, before services were cut, so treat those with more caution than the car and walking times, which depend on distance.

The bus figures are current, and they're thin. The 12 stops with timetable data average about nine departures each on a weekday, with about half a bus per stop in the peak hour, and none of those stops has any weekend service. A stop with nine buses a day and none on Saturday is somewhere to shelter from the rain, not a way to get into town on Saturday.

Every postcode in Liss sits near road noise mapped at or above 65 decibels, the level at which official noise mapping treats road noise as significant, and the loudest band present reaches 75 decibels. Rail noise is a separate source: every postcode also sits near railway noise mapped at 65 decibels. Neither figure tells you how loud any particular house is. It tells you to visit at rush hour and when a train goes by, before you commit.

Liss is middling on connections. Good broadband and a short drive to everything, set against a railway and a bus service that very few residents use, and none of that changes unless you give up the car.
