What are the schools like in Lightwater?

For anyone buying or renting in Lightwater.

Lightwater's schools are good, and the fight is over which good one you get. Nine in ten Surrey schools with a grade are rated good or better. The village has its own infant and junior schools. The nearest secondary sits outside the village, a short drive away. Quality isn't the thing to worry about here. Getting a place is.

Ofsted has graded 159 schools and settings across Surrey, and 147 of them are rated good or better, which is more than nine in every ten. Of those, 30 are outstanding and 117 are good. At the other end, 7 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. These are county-wide counts for the whole local authority, not a tally of Lightwater's own schools, so they describe the system a Lightwater child sits in rather than the building at the end of the road. A further 194 settings hold no published grade yet and sit outside those numbers altogether.

A school name on a map is not a place in a classroom. Admission runs on each school's published criteria, set by the council or the school itself, and living in the village carries no guarantee. Parents who assume the nearest school is automatically theirs tend to learn otherwise when the offers arrive. Read the admissions criteria for each school before the survey, not after completion.

Inside the village, Lightwater Village Infant School and Nursery and Lightwater Village Junior School cover the primary years between them, which suits a place where the school run is a walk rather than a route plan. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 14 minutes' walk from the average home, or about 8 minutes by car. Over towards Bagshot, Bagshot Infant School and Connaught Junior School give families on that side of the village a second pair of options, and a comparison worth making before the application form goes in.

Secondary school means leaving the village. The same modelling puts the nearest secondary about 26 minutes' walk away, about 20 minutes by public transport and about 9 minutes by car. With few buses on the local timetable, plenty of teenagers will find that the most dependable transport is a parent with the engine running. None of this makes the schools worse. It makes the morning longer.

Schools are one of Lightwater's real strengths. The county system around it is overwhelmingly good, the village handles the primary years on its own doorstep, and the hard part is the admissions process, not the teaching.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
