What are the schools like in Iwade?

For anyone buying or renting in Iwade.

The schools around Iwade are good, and the primary is close enough that the car can stay on the drive. The primary is a few minutes' walk away. Results sit above the expected standard. Nine in ten county schools are graded good or better. The secondary run is the part nobody puts in the listing.

Iwade School is about a six-and-a-half-minute walk from the average home, which is the whole reason a lot of these estates sold to young families in the first place. There are four mainstream state primaries in the area, and their average end-of-primary maths score is about 104, comfortably above the expected standard. That's a solid set of results rather than a league-table headline, and it's the kind of solid that parents repeat at barbecues as if they had something to do with it. Nearby options include Bobbing Village School, Newington Church of England Primary School and Lower Halstow Primary School, all within the stretch of villages around Sittingbourne.

Across Kent as a whole, Ofsted has graded 221 of the 245 settings with a published grade as good or better, which is about nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and three are inadequate. Those figures cover the whole county, not only Iwade, so they tell you about the system your children will be allocated within rather than about any one building. A further 255 settings have no published grade yet and are left out of the count altogether.

Secondary school is a car or a bus. The Department for Transport's modelling puts the nearest secondary about 15 minutes away by car and about 18 by public transport. On foot it's about 65 minutes, which in practice means nobody walks it. Buyers who picture teenagers strolling to school on their own should look at the bus timetable before they look at the kitchen.

None of the named schools comes with a guarantee. Living near Iwade School doesn't reserve a place, and admissions follow the council's rules rather than the estate agent's hopes. The allocation letter answers to a formula, and the formula has never been to a viewing. Check each school's current admissions criteria and the last few years of allocations before the offer goes in, not after the removal van leaves.

Schools are one of Iwade's real strengths: a walkable primary, results above the standard and a county where the good ones outnumber the rest by a distance. The only real homework is the secondary journey, and that belongs to the parents.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
