Is Highworth a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Highworth.

Highworth is safe, and it isn't a close call. Crime runs at about half the Swindon rate. Unemployment barely registers. Overcrowding is close to non-existent. The bigger worry for a new resident is where to park.

Police data for the year to May 2026 puts Highworth's crime rate at about 47 per 1,000 residents, roughly 46% below the Swindon average. That amounted to 397 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both are published figures, calculated on the police's own statistical-area populations, so they don't line up neatly with a headcount of the town, and they aren't meant to.

For comparison, the Swindon borough rate over the same year was about 88 per 1,000, against Highworth's 47. Anyone who hears "Swindon" in the postal address and pictures the worst of the borough's figures is thinking of somewhere else. The two numbers belong to the same council and describe very different experiences of it.

The neighbourhoods behind those numbers are compact and settled. Population density averages about 3,680 people per square kilometre across the town's neighbourhoods, which is what a tight hilltop town looks like on paper and not a sign of anything worse. Unemployment sits at about 2%, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. None of that explains the crime figures on its own. It describes the kind of place that produces them: a small town where most people have somewhere to be in the morning and room to be there.

The mix needs a caveat before any number. The totals are low enough that a handful of incidents can move a share by several points, so none of this should be read as a fixed trait of the town. With that said, violence and sexual offences made up about 41% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it covers a broad legal range that includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour came to about 15%, close to the 16% national share. Shoplifting was about 9% against 8%, public order about 9% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 8% against 7%, and other theft about 6% against 7%. Most of those are within a point or two of the national pattern. On a base this small, the violence gap is the one worth noting, and even that isn't worth panicking over.

What happens after a report is a separate question, answered at force level. Wiltshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 32nd of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 34% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That's a force-wide figure, not a Highworth one, and it tells you nothing about how likely a crime is here. It only tells you what to expect if one does happen. The honest answer to "will they catch them" is: sometimes.

Safety is one of Highworth's real strengths. You'll hear about crime here mostly from the neighbours, and the figures don't back up the worry.
