Is Hertford Heath a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Hertford Heath.

Hertford Heath is safe, safer than the district around it. About 52 crimes are recorded per 1,000 residents. The district runs at about 70. Unemployment is close to nil, and almost nobody lives in an overcrowded home. The most excitement the record shows is a few cars broken into and some noise.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded 183 crimes in Hertford Heath in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 52 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly a quarter below the average for East Hertfordshire over the same twelve months. The rate is the police's published figure, worked out against the population of the statistical areas the crimes fall in, so it is the number to compare and not something to recalculate at home.

To see both numbers side by side: Hertford Heath runs at about 52 crimes per 1,000 residents, and East Hertfordshire as a whole runs at about 70. The district includes Hertford, Ware and Bishop's Stortford, and the village does better than all of that averaged together. Buyers who see East Hertfordshire's total and assume it applies to the village are reading the wrong number.

The places that produce numbers like these tend to look much like this one. The average neighbourhood in Hertford Heath houses about 2,110 people per square kilometre, unemployment was about 1% at the 2021 census and about 3% of households were overcrowded. That is a settled village of owners and employed people, with fields at the edges and few streets where trouble has anywhere to go. None of those figures explains the crime rate by itself, but they describe the kind of place it comes from.

By category, violence and sexual offences made up about 39% of recorded crime in Hertford Heath, against about 35% across England and Wales. That broad category includes common assault without injury and is the largest almost everywhere, so the local share is close to the national one. Anti-social behaviour was about 23% here against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 11% against 5%. Other theft and criminal damage were each about 7%, level with the national shares, and drugs about 4% against 4%. With 183 crimes in a year, a single bad night of cars broken into on one road can push vehicle crime up by several points, and the mix may look quite different next year. The police.uk street map lets you see whether last year's incidents bunched up near the road you are looking at, which is the one thing a village-wide percentage cannot show.

Once a crime is reported, Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases across the force, against about 12% nationally, putting it 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 40% of its cases close with nobody identified. Those are figures for the whole force, from Hemel Hempstead to Hoddesdon, and they tell you how a case is handled after the event. They say nothing about how likely an event is in Hertford Heath. In a village this size, how often a car alarm goes off is a better guide to your neighbours than the charge rate is.

Safety is one of the village's clear strengths: crime runs well under the district rate, and most of what does get recorded is the small stuff, at a level a quiet village might expect.
