Is Hartley Wintney a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Hartley Wintney.

Safe enough, but less safe than it looks. Crime runs well above the district average. The types of crime look like anywhere else. Fewer reports end in a charge than in most of the country. The village looks calmer than its figures do.

Police recorded 782 crimes across the Hartley Wintney area in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 61 crimes per 1,000 residents. That rate is roughly 30% above the average for Hart as a whole. It isn't what most people expect from a Hampshire village, or what the listing implies when it says "a peaceful setting."

For comparison, the Hart average is about 47 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 61 here. Neither figure belongs to a city centre. The difference is that Hartley Wintney is measured against a low-crime district, and it comes out on the wrong side of that average.

In other respects, the area doesn't look like a high-crime place. The average density is about 1,380 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2%, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. These describe a comfortable, spread-out, employed kind of place. They don't explain the crime figure, which is why the figure is worth knowing before you buy instead of after.

The mix of crime is ordinary, with one category standing out. Violence and sexual offences make up about 43% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault without injury, so the headline sounds worse than the definition. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 17%, close to the national 16%. Public order offences are about 9%, against 7% nationally. Criminal damage and arson are about 7%, the same as the national share. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5%, and other theft is about 5% against 7% nationally. Most of the list looks like the rest of the country. Violence is the category where the area stands out.

What happens after a report is a separate question. Hampshire Constabulary, the force covering the area, charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year to May 2026. That places it 38th of 42 forces. About 35% of its cases close with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures, not Hartley Wintney's own, and they say nothing about how likely a crime is here. They tell you how likely a charge is once one happens, and the answer is less likely than in most of England and Wales.

Safety is the village's weak point: most streets are quiet, but crime runs well above the district's own low average, and the force covering it charges fewer suspects than most.
