Who lives in Hanslope?

For anyone buying or renting in Hanslope.

Hanslope is mostly home-owning households in middle age, comfortably off and in good health. Three in four own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Private renters are few. Students barely register. It is a village of people who have finished moving house and started improving the one they're in.

The 2021 census, the source for every population figure on this page, found about 76% of Hanslope's households owning their home and about 10% renting privately. Social renting accounts for about 13%, so council and housing association tenants outnumber private ones. A buy-to-let landlord would struggle to find much in the village to buy.

The typical Hanslope resident is 45, and people aged 25 to 44 make up about 24% of the population. That is a village of parents more than young professionals, and of owners old enough to have paid off part of the mortgage and young enough to still be paying for the extension.

The Office for National Statistics modelled typical household income across the area at around £65,600 a year, before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. Spread over a village where most homes are detached or semi-detached, that buys a comfortable life without making anyone rich. A figure from before tax and a few years back tells you the kind of household that lives here, not what lands in anyone's account this month.

About 27% of households are one person living alone, and about 14% of all households are pensioners living alone, part of that same group. Couples with dependent children make up about 18% of households and lone parents about 8%. Families with children are fewer than the house sizes might suggest, which fits a village where many of the children have grown up and the bedrooms stayed.

About 34% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 14% have no formal qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. That is a broad spread more than a graduate enclave or a working village, and a street in Hanslope is as likely to have a plumber as a project manager.

About 85% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across Milton Keynes the council-area rate of deaths from preventable causes is similar to the England average, and so is the share of adults who smoke, at about 11%. Those benchmarks belong to the whole authority, town and villages together, and Hanslope's own figure for self-reported health is the one that describes the village.

The people of Hanslope add up to a comfortable, middling picture: owner-occupiers in their forties and fifties, healthy and solidly paid, without much at either extreme.
