Who lives in Cricklewood?

For anyone buying or renting in Cricklewood.

Cricklewood is mostly people in their thirties who rent from someone else. About a third own their home. A typical resident is in their mid-thirties. Many hold degrees, and a fifth have no qualifications at all. It is a working neighbourhood with more qualifications than security.

At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, about 35% of households owned their home and about 42% rented privately, with another 21% renting from a social landlord. Owners are outnumbered by tenants by some distance, and many of the landlords never set foot here.

The typical resident is 36, and about 34% of the population is aged between 25 and 44. Full-time students are only about 3%, so the young adults here are mostly earning rather than studying.

The Office for National Statistics models average household income here at about £68,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is often two salaries added together, and before tax is taken off. It has to stretch across a market where the typical home sells for more than half a million pounds.

About 32% of households are one person living alone, and about 9% of all households are a pensioner living alone, counted within that 32%. Couples with dependent children make up about 16% and lone parents about 14%. Lone-parent households and couples with children are close to the same size here, and households of one outnumber both.

About 44% of residents hold a degree, about 21% have no formal qualifications and about 3% are in full-time study. The two biggest groups sit at opposite ends of the scale, often in the same street and sometimes in the same converted house.

About 84% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Brent as a whole does better than England on deaths from preventable causes, and the borough's smoking rate is similar to England's. Both of those are borough-wide figures and only a starting point for Cricklewood.

Cricklewood is young, highly qualified and mostly renting, and a fifth of its households live in social housing. On how well rooted its community is, it scores below average, because a large share of residents rent and could leave without much notice.
