Is Carshalton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Carshalton.

Reasonably safe, with a bit more crime than the rest of Sutton. Crime runs a little above the borough average. The types of crime are much the same as anywhere else in the country. Shoplifting is the one that stands out. The shopkeepers have more to worry about than the people who live here.

Over the year to May 2026, 5,327 crimes were recorded in Carshalton, a published rate of about 86 per 1,000 residents. That rate is roughly 9% above the average for the London Borough of Sutton. Because it covers a full twelve months, from June 2025 to May 2026, one bad weekend can't change the picture much.

Across Sutton as a whole, the rate is about 79 crimes per 1,000 people, against Carshalton's 86. So Carshalton is a little busier than its own borough, and its own borough is what most buyers here are comparing it with.

The town is fairly built-up. About 7,600 people live in each square kilometre on average, unemployment is about 3%, and about 7% of households are overcrowded. These figures describe what kind of place Carshalton is. They don't explain the crime figures.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 34% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally, so the biggest category is in line with the rest of the country. That category is broad in law and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour is about 18% here against 16% nationally, public order offences are about 7% in both cases, and vehicle crime is about 7% against 5%. Shoplifting is the clear outlier, at about 11% against 8%. That is a lot of people helping themselves in a village known for its antique shops, clock dealers and a chocolatier on Beeches Avenue. Criminal damage and arson is the one category below the national share, about 5% against 7%, which is a relief in a town with 135 listed buildings.

Getting a case to court is a separate question. The Metropolitan Police, which covers Carshalton, charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, putting it 33rd of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. Across the force, about 53% of cases are closed without a suspect being identified. Those figures are London-wide and measure what the police do after a crime, not how often crime happens in Carshalton. For a particular road, the street-level crime map on the police.uk website shows a year's reports for that stretch. It is more use than any town-wide average.

Carshalton is middling for safety: slightly busier than the rest of Sutton, ordinary in the types of crime it sees, and with a shoplifting share that matters more to the shops than to the people living here.
