Who lives in Burnham-on-Crouch?

For anyone buying or renting in Burnham-on-Crouch.

Burnham-on-Crouch is home mostly to middle-aged and older homeowners who intend to stay. Seven in ten households own their home. The typical resident is about fifty. One household in six is a pensioner living alone. Students hardly feature.

At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, about 72% of Burnham's households owned their home. About 14% rented privately and about 13% rented from a council or housing association. Ownership is the norm here, and the private rental market is the smaller of the two rented sectors by only a hair.

The typical resident is 49, and only about 21% of residents are aged 25 to 44. Those are the years when people usually buy a first family house and fill it with car seats. In Burnham, that age group makes up about one person in five.

The Office for National Statistics models average household income in Burnham at about £54,000 before tax for the financial year to March 2023. That is enough to run a house and keep a boat, as long as the boat is a small one.

About 9% of households are headed by a lone parent.

About 31% of households are one person living alone, and about 17% are a single pensioner, who are counted within that same group. Couples with dependent children make up about 16% of households. For a town that empties onto the water every summer, a surprising number of its households are one person on their own.

About 25% of adults hold a degree, about 20% have no formal qualifications and about 1% are full-time students. The mix sits close to the middle, with a degree-holding share and a no-qualifications share not far apart. With students at about 1%, the town's teenagers mostly leave to study and do much of their growing up elsewhere.

Burnham's population is middling and comfortable: mostly owners, mostly past fifty, and mostly staying put.
