Is Burnham-on-Crouch a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Burnham-on-Crouch.

Burnham-on-Crouch is less safe than the rest of its district, by enough that a buyer should take note. Its crime rate is about a fifth higher than the Maldon district average. Violence makes up a larger share of crime here than it does nationally. Shoplifting and vandalism are about the national norm. Anti-social behaviour is lower than usual. For a small town on a river, that is an odd mix.

Essex Police recorded crime in Burnham-on-Crouch at about 63 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, which is about 21% above the Maldon district average. That rate is a published figure, and it came from 553 recorded crimes over those twelve months. Twelve months of records is enough that one bad weekend wouldn't account for the gap.

The district comparison is easier to judge with both numbers in view. Burnham's rate is about 63 per 1,000 residents, against about 52 for Maldon district as a whole over the same year. That difference adds up over a year of living somewhere.

The figures behind the town look ordinary. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. The local neighbourhoods average about 3,800 residents per square kilometre. None of that describes a place under strain, so the crime rate is harder to explain away.

In the year to May 2026, violence and sexual offences made up about 49% of recorded crime in Burnham, against about 35% across England and Wales. That legal category is broad. It includes common assault where nobody was hurt, and it is the largest category almost everywhere, but here it is still well above the national share. Anti-social behaviour was about 10% of recorded crime, against 16% nationally, so that is the one category where Burnham is quieter than the national average. Shoplifting (about 9% against 8%), public order offences (7% against 7%), criminal damage and arson (7% against 7%) and vehicle crime (5% against 5%) were all close to the national shares. If you are looking at a particular house, the police's street-level crime map will show what has been reported on the roads around it. Look at it by category, since the overall total won't show you what kind of crime it is.

The question after a report is what happens next. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally. On that measure it ranks 28th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 37% of its cases are closed without anyone identified as a suspect. Those are force-wide figures for the twelve months to May 2026. They cover every town Essex Police polices, and they tell you how cases are resolved across the force, which is a separate question from how much crime Burnham has.

Safety is Burnham's weak point. It has more crime than the rest of its own district, and the extra comes mostly from violence.
