What are the schools like in Burnham-on-Crouch?

For anyone buying or renting in Burnham-on-Crouch.

Schools are what Burnham-on-Crouch has least to apologise for. Across the county, nearly nine in ten graded schools are good or better. The local primaries post solid maths results. There is one secondary in the area, so the choice at eleven is a short one. In a town that runs its weekends on tide tables, the school run is about the most predictable thing going.

There are two mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 108. Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School carries the town's name. St Mary's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School has the more unusual alumni list, which includes the professional wrestler Neil Faith. Further out, St Nicholas Church of England Primary School serves Tillingham. Not many primary schools can say one of their former pupils went into wrestling.

The area has one mainstream state secondary, and its pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 42. Ormiston Rivers Academy is the secondary school serving the town. Having one secondary makes the decision at eleven simple. Families who want something different should expect a longer journey.

Ofsted has given 218 of the 246 graded schools and settings in Essex a rating of good or better, about nine in ten. That figure covers the whole county, not just the Dengie peninsula. Of those graded, 22 are outstanding, 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet. None of the county totals tell you about a particular classroom in Burnham.

Living close to a school does not guarantee a place there. Essex allocates places using the council's published admissions rules, so the front door nearest the school gate gives no automatic right to a place. Look up the council's rules for the exact school you want, including how the last places were allocated, while the house is still only a viewing. It is a small town, and that still catches out families who assumed the nearest school was theirs.

Schools are one of Burnham's real strengths, and the river shares that billing rather than stealing it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
