Is Bude a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bude.

Yes, in the unspectacular way that most of rural Cornwall is safe. The recorded crime rate sits slightly below the county average. The town is small, thinly spread and short on the kind of night-time economy that fills a police log. Almost nobody is out of work. What Bude offers is not a fortress, it is a place where the numbers refuse to give you anything to worry about.

Police.uk recorded 742 crimes across Bude in the twelve months to May 2026, giving a published rate of about 70 crimes per thousand people. That sits roughly 6% below the Cornwall average. Both of those are published figures calculated on their own statistical population base, so the rate is not something you can reconstruct from the headcount, and the count on its own tells you very little without it.

Put the two side by side and the gap is modest rather than dramatic. Cornwall as a whole runs at about 74 crimes per thousand people. Bude comes in at about 70. That is a town performing slightly better than its county, not a town that has solved anything the rest of Cornwall has not.

The texture behind those numbers is worth understanding. Population density across Bude's neighbourhoods averages around 2,660 people per square kilometre, which is a town-shaped figure sitting inside a rural county. Unemployment runs at about 3%. Overcrowded households make up about 2% of the stock. None of that causes anything on its own, but it describes the kind of place these numbers come from: a settled small town with a lot of space and very little pressure on housing.

On what actually gets reported, violence and sexual offences make up about 44% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally. That category needs reading carefully. It is a broad statutory grouping that includes common assault without injury, it is the largest category almost everywhere in England and Wales, and it tells you far less about your evening walk than the headline suggests. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 13% locally against about 16% nationally, so slightly less of Bude's crime mix than the national picture. Shoplifting is about 10% against roughly 8% nationally, other theft about 9% against about 7%, and criminal damage and arson about 8% against about 7%. Public order sits at about 7% locally and 7% nationally, which is as close to identical as these things get. Fourteen categories appear in total across a base of 742 crimes.

What happens after someone reports something is a different question from how much happens, and the answer is less comfortable. Devon and Cornwall Police charged a suspect in about 8% of cases over the twelve months to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, placing the force 42nd out of the 42 forces in England and Wales on that measure. About 26% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. That is a force-wide statistic covering everything from Bude to Plymouth, decided by resourcing and prosecution thresholds rather than by anything happening on a particular street, and it says nothing about whether your street is quiet. It does answer the question people actually mean when they ask whether the police will catch anyone.

Safety is one of the more reassuring things about Bude, and the reassurance is the ordinary kind rather than the remarkable kind: a small coastal town, a below-average county rate, and a crime mix that mostly tracks the national shape.
