Who lives in Bromham, Bedfordshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Bromham, Bedfordshire.

Bromham is mostly middle-aged homeowners with good jobs and the gardens to go with them. Nearly nine in ten households own their home. The typical resident is about fifty. Two in five adults have a degree. Not many of them are in a hurry to move.

At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure here, about 87% of Bromham's households owned their home, about 9% rented privately and about 4% rented from a council or housing association. Bromham's population was 4,652, living in 1,957 households. Getting a rented house here is mostly a matter of waiting for one to come up.

The typical resident is 49. People aged 25 to 44, the years of first mortgages and young children, make up only about 19% of the population. Families move in once they've already climbed most of the housing ladder somewhere else.

The Office for National Statistics models median household income for the area at about £82,000 before tax for the financial year to March 2023. That figure is a few years old, and tax comes off it before anyone pays a mortgage, but it's enough to explain the four-bedroom detached houses.

Lone parents head about 7% of households.

About 26% of households are one person living alone, and most of those are single pensioners, at about 17% of all households. Couples with children living at home are about 22%. Taken together, that's a village of families with older children, couples whose children have left, and widowed or single older residents in bungalows that were built with them in mind.

About 40% of adults hold a degree or higher, about 12% have no formal qualifications, and full-time students are about 2% of residents. Students make up a small share because there are hardly any flats or rented rooms in the village. The young people who grew up here have mostly moved somewhere cheaper with more going on.

About 85% of Bromham's residents described their own health as good or very good at the census. Bedford borough's rate of deaths from preventable causes is similar to England's, and the borough's smoking rate, about 12%, is similar to the England figure too. Those are borough-wide measures and say nothing in particular about Bromham.

Bromham's residents are well educated, mostly in good health, comfortably off and rarely ready to sell, which is one of the village's real strengths.
