Bredon is home mostly to older, comfortably off homeowners, and most of them intend to stay. Four in five households own their home. The typical resident is just past fifty. About two in five adults have a degree. Renters and young families are here too, but they are a minority.
The 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, counted 2,071 people in Bredon in 898 households. About 81% of those households own their home outright or with a mortgage. About 12% rent privately and 6% rent from a council or housing association. Bredon began as a monastery in the eighth century, and its residents still move house about as often as monks did.
The typical Bredon resident was 51 at the census. People aged 25 to 44, the years of new mortgages and young children, made up about 18% of the population. Most of the village is past that stage, and the people who are still in it are outnumbered.
The Office for National Statistics models gross household income for Bredon's neighbourhood at about £64,000 a year, before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That estimate is averaged across the surrounding area, so the households either side of it can be well above or below. It is comfortable money for a village where most people have already paid for the house.
The rest of the household picture is just as stable. Lone-parent families make up about 6% of households, and couples with dependent children about 22%. Roughly one home in five has school-age children at the kitchen table, and the rest are run by people whose children have grown up and moved out.
Single-person households make up about 25% of the total. That includes the 16% of households where one person aged 66 or over lives alone. For a large share of Bredon's front doors there is one resident behind them, usually older, often in the house they have lived in for decades. That is one reason the village notices who comes and goes.
About 40% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree-level qualification, and about 12% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students make up about 1% of the population. With no college in the village, school-leavers who go on to study mostly leave Bredon to do it.
The people of Bredon are where the village does best: settled owners, comfortable incomes and neighbours who mostly stay put. It is a very good place for people who want to stay a long time and know who lives next door.
