What are the schools like in Bracknell?

For anyone buying or renting in Bracknell.

Bracknell's schools are the one part of the town nobody needs to apologise for. Every school the inspectors have graded is good or better. Not one needs improvement. Two are outstanding. Parents here will have to find something else to worry about.

For primaries, the Key Stage 2 maths average around here is 106. That figure comes from a single mainstream state primary in the area, so it tells you how one school did, not how the whole town did. The estates have their own schools. Great Hollands and Wildridings, where the planners named the streets in alphabetical order, have Great Hollands Primary School and Wildridings Primary School on their doorsteps. The new town was designed so the school run was a short walk, and for once the design held up.

Across the Bracknell Forest local authority, which is a wider area than the town, Ofsted has graded 17 schools and all 17 are good or better. Two are outstanding. None is rated requires improvement and none inadequate. Other schools in the area have not been given a published grade yet, which says nothing about how good they are. A clean record across a whole borough is rare, and it takes the fun out of the school-gate conversation that goes "well, it depends which one".

At secondary level, the names people ask about include Garth Hill College, King's Academy Easthampstead Park and The Brakenhale School. The Brakenhale School still carries one of the old spellings of the town's name, from before the new town arrived. Ranelagh School and the rest of the borough's secondaries fill out the options. The choice isn't between a good school and a bad one. It's between good schools at different distances from your front door.

Living near a school does not guarantee a place there. The council's admission rules and the number of other children applying that year decide who gets in, and neither is known when you exchange contracts. A listing that says a house is "near excellent schools" is describing where the house is, not promising anything. Check the admission rules for the address before you rely on it.

Schools are the thing Bracknell does best. The worst you'll get here is a good school slightly further from home than you'd like.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
