Is Bracknell a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bracknell.

Bracknell is safe enough to live in, but it's the busier, rougher end of its own borough. Crime runs above the borough average. Hardly anyone is out of work. The crime mix looks much like the rest of the country's. It's a town behaving like a town, surrounded by villages behaving like villages.

Police recorded 7,188 crimes in Bracknell in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 79 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 17% above the local-authority average. None of this makes the town dangerous. It means the town centre, the shops and the late buses are all here, and so is the recorded crime that goes with them.

To compare the two directly, Bracknell's rate is about 79 per 1,000 and the Bracknell Forest average is about 68. The borough figure includes the villages around the town, where the most common late-night incident is a fox knocking over a bin. A town is always going to lose to its own countryside on this measure. Estate agents selling the town tend to quote the borough figure, and agents selling the villages tend to quote the town's.

As for the kind of place producing these numbers, Bracknell's neighbourhoods average about 5,150 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 4% of households are overcrowded. That describes a compact town where people work, not a struggling one. More people living close together means more everything, including more calls to the police, and none of these figures is the cause of the crime rate.

The mix of crimes is ordinary. Violence and sexual offences make up about 39% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range, including common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour is about 13% of the total, below the 16% national share. Shoplifting is about 10% against 8%, other theft about 8% against 7%, public order offences about 7% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. Most of these sit within a point or two of the national figure. Nothing in the mix points to a problem particular to Bracknell. It's a normal set of crimes, and a few more of them than in the villages.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question, and the answer is less comfortable. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which put it 37th of 42 forces over the year from June 2025 to May 2026. In about 37% of cases the investigation closes with nobody identified. Those are force-wide figures, decided across the whole force area, and they say nothing about how safe any particular street in Bracknell is. They do tell you how likely you are to get your bike back if it's stolen.

Bracknell isn't a dangerous place, but it trails its own borough on safety and a buyer should take that into account. Of the questions a buyer asks here, this is one of the two where the answer is weaker than you'd hope.
