What are the schools like in Biddenden?

For anyone buying or renting in Biddenden.

The schools are good. Getting to the secondary one is the hard part. Nine in ten graded schools across Kent are good or better. The village has its own primary, with a very long history. Secondary school means a drive. The teaching is fine. The school run is where parents struggle.

Ofsted has graded 245 schools and other settings across Kent, the whole local authority rather than just the Biddenden area, and 221 of them are good or better. That's about nine in ten. Thirty-eight are rated Outstanding, 21 Requires Improvement and three Inadequate. Another 255 settings haven't been graded yet, which says nothing either way about their quality. Across a county that size, the odds favour any parent reading an inspection report.

None of that guarantees a place. Admissions follow the council's and each school's own rules, and a school's name on a map near your house isn't an offer letter. Buyers who pick a house for the school without checking last year's allocations sometimes find out in the spring that the rules were fair and still went against them. Check the admissions criteria for the specific school before you check the kitchen.

The school most tied to the village is John Mayne Church of England Primary School. It's named after the benefactor who founded the village school in 1522, so it has been educating Biddenden's children for longer than most of the village's houses have stood. Smarden Primary School serves the neighbouring village this page also covers. The area has several other small Church of England primaries in the surrounding villages. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about seven minutes away by car or 15 minutes on foot, which is a reasonable walk for a rural village.

Secondary school is where the car comes in. The nearest secondary is about 14 minutes by car in the same modelling, but around 35 minutes by public transport and about 75 on foot. The secondary schools in reach include Cranbrook School and Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre, and Benenden School is also in the wider area. Teenagers here learn early that the bus timetable is optional reading, because the bus often isn't there.

Schools are one of Biddenden's real strengths. The quality is there, and the only real cost is the driving.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
