Who lives in Bicknacre?

For anyone buying or renting in Bicknacre.

Bicknacre is mostly home-owners in middle age and beyond, people who bought decades ago and stayed. More than eight in ten households own their home. The typical resident is close to fifty. Household incomes are comfortable. Families with children are a minority, and pensioners living alone are nearly as common.

The 2021 Census is the source for every population figure here, and they cover the wider Bicknacre area, home to about 5,543 people across the village and its neighbouring parishes. About 83% of households own their home. About 10% rent privately and about 7% rent from the council or a housing association. Social landlords let almost as many homes here as private ones, so a tenant looking for a private let won't find much to choose from.

The median age is 49. People aged 25 to 44 make up about 22% of residents. Young families came to the new estates in 1969 and the 1980s, and judging by the age profile, a fair number of them never moved on.

Office for National Statistics modelling puts the typical household income across the area at about £70,600 a year before tax, in the financial year to March 2023. That's a gross figure, and a few years old. It's still enough to explain the detached houses and the two cars on most drives.

About 27% of households are one person living alone, and about 15% are pensioners living alone, who are counted inside that 27%. Couples with dependent children make up about 19%, and lone parents about 7%. A pensioner living alone is nearly as common as a couple raising children. Walk round the post-war closes and plenty of the family houses are now home to one or two people.

About 29% of residents hold a degree, about 17% have no qualifications, and about 1% are full-time students. It's a mixed workforce, with plenty of trade and practical skills alongside the graduates, and hardly anyone here is still in education. Anyone leaving for university tends to come back with their own children, if they come back at all.

About 389 residents live in communal settings such as care homes, rather than private households, and the area has one care home of its own. Those residents are counted in the population totals but not in the household shares, so the household picture describes everyone except them. Some of the older end of the age profile lives in residential care rather than on the estates.

The people of Bicknacre are typical of comfortable, owner-occupied Essex. Most are older, well settled and not short of money, and there's nothing unusual about the mix in either direction.
