What are the schools like in Bicknacre?

For anyone buying or renting in Bicknacre.

The schools around Bicknacre are good, and the village has its own primary school. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are rated good or better. The local primaries have a solid average maths score at the end of primary school. Secondary school means leaving the village. Distance is the issue, and the teaching isn't.

Around Bicknacre there are 10 state primary schools, and their pupils average a maths score of about 105 at the end of primary school. Priory Primary School is in the village. East Hanningfield Church of England Primary Academy serves the neighbouring part of the area, and Danbury Park Community Primary School and Rettendon Primary School are close by. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts a primary school about an 11-minute walk or a 7-minute drive from the average home. The medieval priory is now a single arch in a field, and its name carries on mostly over the school gate.

Ofsted has graded 246 schools and settings in Essex, and 218 of them are good or better, which is nearly nine in ten. Of the rest, 22 are outstanding, 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county, from Chelmsford to the coast, so they describe the system a Bicknacre family is buying into rather than the school at the end of the road.

Essex County Council allocates school places using its published admissions rules, and living near Priory Primary doesn't by itself secure a place there. The council publishes how far away the last child was offered a place each year, and it's worth checking that for any address on a shortlist. Families who choose the house first and read the admissions rules afterwards usually find out in the spring.

Secondary school is a car journey or a bus ride. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about 16 minutes away by car and 25 by public transport, and the public transport figure is the one more likely to have aged. Within reach are William de Ferrers School, The Sandon School and Great Baddow High School. King Edward VI Grammar School and Chelmsford County High School for Girls are in the same borough, and their entrance exams come round each year. Some parents here choose the house for the drive to the grammar schools and say afterwards it was for the fields.

Bicknacre's schools are one of its real strengths. The trade-off is the journey to secondary school, not the quality of the teaching.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
